Tips to Maintain Good Eye Health

Most people agree that one of the most important senses is sight, since it is through it that we are able to process most of the information we receive every day.

The good news is that there are a series of tips and recommendations that we can put into practice to prevent some of the eye problems that usually afflict people over the years.

-Make sure you have an adequate light source around you. Lack of light can cause a decrease in tear secretion and therefore in eye moisture. This is because we blink less times per minute when we are exposed to low light.

-Wear sunglasses with UV protection. Prolonged exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause alterations in the retina, opacity in the crystalline lens (cataracts), macular degeneration, etc.

This is why the use of sunglasses with dark and polarized glass is recommended, since they filter the light received by the lens and neutralize its reflections, providing a clearer vision. Ideally, the frame should be wide to block as much light as possible.

-Wear eyeglasses with anti-reflective coating. It is advisable to use anti-reflective lenses to avoid forcing visual focus, improve vision and eliminate reflections. Similarly, glasses with a wrong prescription should not be used, as this would only strain the eyes unnecessarily.

-Maintain a proper hygiene routine when inserting and removing contact lenses. To avoid infections, it is essential to handle contact lenses with clean hands. Likewise, they should be removed before going to sleep, washed with the indicated solution and then stored in their container.

-Limit the use of cell phones, computers or tablets as much as possible. It is no secret that the prolonged and excessive use of electronic devices with screens causes irritation and visual fatigue, due to the contrast and brightness they emanate. They can also trigger headaches, blurred vision, eye dryness and redness, double vision, etc.

If the use of these devices becomes essential, we can choose not to use them in a dark room, adjust the brightness to an adequate level, place the screen about 50 cm away from the eyes and set the font to a size that allows reading without the need to bring the screen closer to the eyes.

-To maintain distance with the television. It is recommended to look at the TV keeping at least 2 meters of distance. On the other hand, when reading books, we can do it keeping 30 cm approximately.

-Rest your eyes. Regardless of the activity we are doing, it is advisable that every 30 minutes we take 2 minutes to close our eyes and do eye exercises such as moving our eyes from side to side and up and down.

-Maintain a diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Let us try to include in our daily meals foods that are rich in vitamin A (such as liver) and C (citrus fruits) as they favor the function of retinal cells. Likewise, omega-3 and fish oil supplements contain antioxidants that prevent conditions such as macular degeneration. Another antioxidant is green tea, which thanks to its catechins prevents the development of cataracts.

-Good hygiene habits. Avoid touching and rubbing your eyes with your hands as much as possible, as this can favor the entry of microorganisms and the development of infections.

-Keep certain systemic diseases at bay. Pathologies such as hypertension and diabetes can affect the blood vessels of the retina. At the same time, in the presence of these diseases, the risk of glaucoma and cataracts increases.

-Have a good sleep routine. While we sleep, the eyes recover from the aggressions and stimuli they receive during the day, since at night the epithelial cells that cover them regenerate.

-Use quality, hypoallergenic makeup. Due to the proximity, eye makeup can easily penetrate this organ, so great care should be taken in the products you decide to use. Another key factor is to properly remove makeup before going to sleep.
