Symptoms of Astigmatism

As light enters your eye, it passes through your eye's cornea and the lens. The cornea and lens bend the light as it travels to the retina at the back of the eye. When the cornea and lens are correctly shaped, the light lands appropriately on the retina, allowing us to see images in focus. However, when either the cornea or lens are shaped irregularly, they refract the light incorrectly, so the light does not focus clearly on the retina. The result is symptoms including:

•           Squinting to see clearly

•           Blurred vision

•           Eye strain and discomfort

•           Headaches

Diagnosing Astigmatism

Astigmatism is diagnosed during an eye exam by an eye doctor. Using an eye chart or a phoropter (the large binocular-like device), our optometrist assesses the clarity of your vision. We may also use other devices to measure your eyes' structure. The combination of tools helps our staff determine the extent of corrections needed and the appropriate treatments.

Astigmatism Treatment

Refractive errors, including astigmatism, are highly treatable, and individuals with minor astigmatism often do not need treatment. When the astigmatism interferes with daily functioning, it is often treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Patients who want contact lenses can use soft or rigid glass permeable lenses, however, more severe cases often require rigid lenses.

LASIK surgery is also a standard treatment for astigmatism. Whether LASIK is appropriate for any individual depends on the type of error and the patient's lifestyle, health, and age.
